The virtues of zakat in the Quran

By Sami Adham · Published:

Zakat is often explained as numbers: 2.5%, a nisab, a date. The Quran explains it with other words: cleanse, grow, right. This article looks at those words.

Short answer: The Quran links zakat with three ideas. It cleanses the giver (9:103). It helps the giver grow, which is one meaning of the Arabic root of the word zakat. And it treats the share of people in need as their right, not a favour (70:24-25). These are the Quran's words. We add no promise of our own.

One word, two meanings

The word zakat comes from the Arabic root z-k-w. Classical Arabic dictionaries, such as Ibn Manzur's Lisan al-Arab, record two meanings for it: growth and purity.

So the name itself carries the idea. Something is taken out, and what is left is cleaner and can grow.

It cleanses and it helps grow (9:103)

Quran 9:103 uses two verbs side by side: to cleanse (tutahhiruhum) and to make grow (tuzakkihim). The second one shares the root of the word zakat.

Zakat cleanses the giver of sins (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir) and, other commentators add, of miserliness (al-Razi, Mafatih al-Ghayb). The verse came down about a group who confessed a fault; most commentators apply it to zakat in general. The verse also asks for a prayer for the giver, a prayer that brings calm.

A known right (70:24-25)

Quran 70:24-25 describes people in whose wealth there is a known right for those in need. The word is haqq: a right, something owed.

Many commentators read this "known right" as the obligatory zakat (Qatada, Ibn Sirin); others as a set share given beyond zakat (Mujahid, al-Sha'bi), as al-Qurtubi records. Either way, giving is a right in the wealth, not a favour.

This changes how the gift feels on both sides. The person who receives zakat is taking what is theirs. The person who pays is settling what was never fully theirs to keep.

Goodness is more than ritual (2:177)

Quran 2:177 says that goodness is not about which way you face. It then lists what goodness is. Giving wealth to people in need appears in the list. So does paying zakat, named separately.

Voluntary giving and zakat stand side by side in one verse. Our article on zakat and sadaqa explains the difference.

What does the giver gain?

The verses above speak of cleansing, growth and calm. They describe the heart, not a bank balance.

Zakat is not a way to make money. Virtues are described only in the words of the Quran and sahih hadith; no promise of reward or more money. It also helps in a plain way: once a year, you sit down and count what you have.

And the hadith?

This draft cites the Quran only. Hadith on the virtues of zakat will be added only after each one has been opened and checked on sunnah.com, with its grade and the name of the scholar who graded it. Our method is on How we check religious sources.

Numbers tell you how much. These verses tell you why. Cleanse, grow, right: three words to keep in mind when the date comes round.

Quran cited

﴿خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَّهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ﴾ [9:103]

Meaning (our own wording): Take from their wealth a charity by which you cleanse them and help them grow, and pray for them. Your prayer brings them calm. God hears all and knows all.

﴿وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ﴾ [70:24-25]

Meaning (our own wording): And those in whose wealth there is a known right, for the one who asks and for the one who goes without.

Meaning (our own wording): Goodness is not turning your face to the east or the west. Goodness is to believe in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book and the prophets; to give wealth, though you love it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveller, those who ask, and to free people from bondage; to keep up the prayer and pay the zakat; to keep your promises; and to stay patient in poverty, illness and danger. These are the truthful ones, and these are the ones who are mindful of God.

Corrections

  • : Review: "commentators apply it to zakat in general" now reads "most commentators" (not every commentator says this), as on the zakat page.
  • : Source review: 9:103 commentary attributed (sins: al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir; miserliness: al-Razi) with the occasion of revelation; both readings of "a known right" (70:24) added; virtues line aligned with our policy.
